Herculaneum V.4. Casa del Telaio or House of the Loom or House of the Tailor.
Entrance to workshop, linked to entrance to dwelling at V.3.
This entrance doorway probably led into the actual factory, workroom, storeroom, as well as the shop.
The whole of the front part of the building was covered with one big roof, whose eaves reached far out over the pavement.
The large room on the left of the entrance originally had an uninterrupted series of loop-holes under the roof, later filled in.

This north side of this boundary marker would be the property at V.5, Casa del Mobilio carbonizzato or House of the Wooden Furniture.
According to Wallace-Hadrill, a reconstructed marble plaque has been hung from an iron fixing on the façade of these properties at the boundary point.
On one side JULIA, on the other M(arcus) NONIUS M(arci) l(ibertus) DAMA……
We cannot reconstruct what it was that made Nonius Dama and Julia argue over their boundary, but at least it reveals the identity of the owners on the two sides, a freedman belonging to the biggest family in town, and a woman whose imperial name implies that she too was from a family of imperial freedmen.
Who owned which side (and if the plaque has been put back in the right position), we cannot tell.

Along the east side of the portico, in the area of the window/door of the rear room behind the remaining columns of the portico, small leftovers of charred wood were collected, and some clay weights of the usual pyramid shape were found, belonging probably to a loom of a weaver.
